Apple Modifies App Store Rules to Allow EU Music Apps to Offer External Payments

Apple has changed its App Store rules in the EU to allow music apps to inform users about payment alternatives outside the App Store.

This comes after the European Commission fined Apple €1.8 billion for antitrust violations related to App Store restrictions that prevented apps from promoting cheaper subscription services outside the App Store.

Apple initially planned to appeal the fine.

Apple disputes the European Commission's decision that the tech giant must allow music-streaming apps to offer links to external purchasing options without being charged a commission.

Apple claimed there was no evidence of consumer harm.

However, Apple updated its App Store guidelines to allow such links but with a 27% commission if a sale is made within seven days of clicking the link.

The Commission is assessing if Apple has fully complied with the decision.
