Earthshot Prize to be Held in Brazil in 2024, Announced by Prince William

The annual environmental awards will take place in Rio de Janeiro coinciding with the COP30 UN climate change summit.
Prince William, the Prince of Wales, announced that the Earthshot Prize will take place in Brazil this year, specifically in Rio de Janeiro in November.

This year’s venue coincides with the COP30 United Nations climate change summit, which is also being hosted in Brazil during the same month.

In his announcement, Prince William emphasized the significance of hosting the Earthshot Prize in Brazil, a country known for its biodiversity and environmental innovation.

He expressed optimism about the potential for new ideas to create safer, healthier lifestyles, stating that there is 'fresh momentum for new ideas' to address pressing global environmental challenges.

The Earthshot Prize was established by the prince to recognize and promote scalable solutions aimed at 'repairing' the planet.

The initiative features five categories, referred to as Earthshots: Protect and restore nature; Clean our air; Revive our oceans; Build a waste-free world; and Fix our climate.

Each of the five winning finalists receives a grant of £1 million to further develop their environmental solutions.

The announcement comes as a video is set to be released, showcasing Prince William along with notable supporters of the Earthshot Prize, including actress Cate Blanchett, global ambassador Robert Irwin, and celebrities such as David Beckham, Hannah Waddingham, and Heidi Klum.

Former Brazilian football stars Cafu and Mauro Silva are also featured in the promotional material.

William has been a consistent presence at the Earthshot Prize events, having attended all ceremonies since its inception.

The most recent awards ceremony took place in Cape Town in November 2023, following events in Singapore in 2023, Boston in 2022, and London in 2021. The upcoming ceremony in Brazil marks a significant moment in the Earthshot decade, which is set to reach its midpoint in 2025.
