On February 27, 2025, an e-bike left unattended on the platform at Rayners Lane station in northwest London caught fire, resulting in the evacuation of passengers.

The incident occurred shortly before noon, with smoke emanating from the vehicle, leading to a swift response from emergency teams.

The London Fire Brigade received reports of the fire at approximately 11:30 a.m., dispatching three fire engines and around 20 firefighters to the scene.

The fire was extinguished within half an hour.

Videos captured by bystanders displayed the e-bike engulfed in flames, ultimately reducing it to ashes.

In light of the fire, staff at the station instructed commuters to move away from the platform.

A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade confirmed that one e-bike was completely destroyed and that fire crews assisted in the evacuation process.

Transport for London indicated that the incident led to temporary service suspensions on both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines, which have since been reinstated but continue to experience severe delays.

Notably, TfL’s Conditions of Carriage explicitly prohibit the transportation of electric scooters on various transport services, including the Tube.

This incident is part of a broader concern linked to e-bikes, as previous reports indicate that in the past year, there were 142 e-bike fires and 29 involving e-scooters in London.

Furthermore, since 2023, there have been three fatalities attributed to fires caused by e-bike battery failures, and over 100 individuals have sustained injuries in related incidents.

In some cases, the fires have been linked to catastrophic battery failures, which can trigger intense fires.

Earlier reports highlighted two significant fires caused by similar failures, resulting in severe property damage and the loss of two dogs.

Richard Field, deputy assistant commissioner for prevention and protection with the London Fire Brigade, emphasized the dangers associated with battery failures in e-bikes, stating that these events can lead to devastating outcomes.
