Driver with vision issues causes fatal crash in Southport
Ignoring medical advice about his poor eyesight, a driver struck and killed two women in Southport.
Glyn Jones, who couldn't see properly, was sentenced to over seven years in prison for the 2021 accident that claimed the lives of Marie Cunningham, 79, and Grace Foulds, 85.
Jones, 68, knew he was unfit to drive due to his eye condition, keratoconus, which had been diagnosed over a decade earlier. He was traveling between 28 and 38mph without braking before the collision, according to investigators.
The victims were walking home when Jones hit them with his Audi A3. CCTV footage contradicted his claim about where the women were crossing. The court highlighted his dangerous driving as the sole cause of the tragedy.
The incident caused profound grief for the victims' families, who remembered their loved ones as active, social individuals involved in their community.
Jones has also received a driving ban for nearly a decade following his eventual release.
