Downing Street Cancels Rishi Sunak’s Year-End Immigration Speech
Downing Street has shelved plans for a year-end speech by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak addressing immigration issues, amidst challenges with new policies aimed at curbing irregular arrivals. The anticipated speech was to update on the controversial Rwanda deportation plan and the housing of asylum seekers on ships and in retired military barracks.

Although officials from Downing Street refuted claims of a scheduled announcement, a government spokesperson affirmed the commitment to addressing the backlog of old asylum cases. Leaked figures indicate significant progress has been made, potentially fulfilling Sunak’s promise to eliminate the backlog. However, concerns over the alleged reclassification of claims to meet targets have arisen.
Sunak managed to evade a major revolt from hardline Conservative MPs over the Rwanda policy. Nevertheless, he faces potential opposition from centrist MPs wary of any far-right-leaning concessions.
While approximately 300 asylum seekers remain aboard the Bibby Stockholm, no further ships have been commissioned. The failure to deliver the expected speech has invited criticism, highlighting the ongoing struggle with immigration policy and its implications for the Conservative party's stance against Labour.
Last December, Sunak committed to resolving the backlog of initial asylum decisions by the end of the following year, emphasizing an 80% reduction in the 91,000-case backlog. The government continues efforts to expedite asylum processing and plans to address illegal Channel crossings and initiate deportation flights to Rwanda.
