New data suggests that every police force in England and Wales has reported migrants who are domestic-abuse victims to Immigration Enforcement.
The Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales, Nicole Jacobs, has raised concerns about this practice, as it deters victims from coming forward and empowers abusers.
In the three years leading up to March 2023, police checked the immigration status of 537 complainants in domestic abuse cases, although no victim was detained or removed as a result.
Jacobs has called for an end to this practice, urging the home secretary to establish a "data-sharing firewall" to prevent police and other services from reporting victims to Immigration Enforcement. She is also advocating for an amendment to the Victims and Prisoners Bill.
