Discounts Offered to Reduce Peak Electricity Use amid Cold

To manage increased electricity demand during Wednesday's cold spell, select households will be incentivized with discounts for reducing power usage at peak times between 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM GMT. Participating suppliers in the National Grid ESO program will reward smart meter users who minimize their consumption.

National Grid assured customers that electricity supplies are secure and there's no need for concern. The scheme, initiated last year, aims to bolster spare capacity margins and is not a response to electricity shortages.

Payments for reduced usage will vary and can be deducted from bills, credited to accounts, or cashed out. The scheme, which also accommodates businesses, saved enough energy last year to power 10 million homes, with 1.6 million customers across 31 suppliers joining in 22 events.

Octopus Energy is participating and offers its customers rewards or account credits; customers can also convert these to charity donations. Signing up with Octopus earns customers 100 points, and each kilowatt-hour saved can add 3,200 points, equal to £4.

The UK, which relies on gas for over 40% of its electricity, felt the impact on energy prices due to last winter's disruption of gas supply from Russia to Europe. Despite lowered gas and electricity prices this year, UK households might still see higher energy bills compared to the previous winter due to the absence of government bill support.
