Diesel Prices Plunge to Record Low, But RAC Calls for Further Reduction

The price of diesel fell to a record 12p per litre in May, according to the RAC, who also stated that the price should be lower to fully reflect changes in the wholesale market.

The RAC believes that the fall in diesel prices is due to the Competition and Markets Authority's announcement in May that rising prices in 2022 partly reflected "weakening competition" in the fuel retailing market.

The RAC also noted that Northern Ireland has cheaper diesel prices than the rest of the UK.

Petrol prices fell by around 3p in May.

The cost of living has been a significant issue, with debt advice firms banned from receiving referral fees and house prices experiencing their biggest annual fall in nearly 14 years.

UK inflation has eased in recent weeks, with falling energy prices helping to bring down the overall rate, though food prices remain high.
