Deutsche Bank Reports 11-Year High First-Quarter Profit of €1.45 Billion, Boosted by Investment Wing's 13% Growth

Deutsche Bank reported a net income of €1.45 billion for the first quarter of 2023, marking a 10% increase from the same period last year and the highest first-quarter profit since 2013.

Net revenues grew 1% year on year to €7.8 billion, primarily driven by growth in commissions and fee income.

The investment wing of the bank saw a 13% increase in revenue to €3 billion, with trading of fixed-income assets up 7%.

Deutsche Bank's investment wing experienced a 54% increase in origination and advisory revenues, the highest level in nine quarters, and a 14% rise in financing revenues.

The division offers various financial services, including mergers and acquisitions advice and business optimization.

The strong investment results mark a turnaround after a 9% revenue decline in 2023.

CEO Christian Sewing aims to increase Deutsche Bank's total revenue to €30 billion in 2023 to boost profitability, but some analysts consider this target unrealistic due to predicted interest rate cuts, which may lead to lower loan fees.

Deutsche Bank announced 3,500 job cuts in February as part of cost-cutting measures, despite positive overall earnings.

However, revenue at the corporate bank decreased by 5% year-on-year, and private bank revenue fell around 2%.

The dip in Deutsche Bank's shares, down 1.36% by noon on Thursday, may be due to a lack of guidance on net interest income for the coming year.
