Denmark's Foreign Minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, has strongly dismissed US President Donald Trump's recent suggestions about taking over Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

Rasmussen told reporters on Tuesday that no nation should have the right to claim control over another country, regardless of its size.

Trump's statements in early January, where he proposed that the US might consider military action to gain control of both Greenland and the Panama Canal, caused concern.

Although Trump did not mention Greenland in his inauguration speech, he reiterated his position in the Oval Office, describing Greenland as a 'wonderful place' and highlighting its significance for international security.

He also hinted that Denmark might be open to relinquishing control due to the financial costs of maintaining the territory.

Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute Egede, confirmed that Greenland is 'not for sale' but remains open to business opportunities with the US. Despite the tensions, there was some relief in Denmark as Trump did not make Greenland a priority in his inaugural address.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, while recognizing the importance of Denmark's relationship with the US, emphasized the need to handle the situation carefully.

The Danish government has initiated discussions with party leaders to address the ongoing issues.
