Defunct Government Scheme Leaves 10,000 New Homes Unbuilt
A UK government scheme to use vacant military land for housing was shelved without any homes being built. The plan aimed for 10,000 homes, but the Ministry of Defence pulled most sites. Although land for 35,000 homes was found, none has been released.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) retracted most of the designated sites, originally selected since the scheme began in 2019.
Although the MoD identified additional surplus 'brownfield' land for nearly 35,000 new homes, none has been released or sold.
The initiative, a collaboration between the MoD and the government’s housing agency, Homes England, identified seven initial sites.
Only one site at MoD Stafford was handed to Homes England but remains undeveloped.
Another site in Ripon, North Yorkshire, is under consideration for private development.
The remaining five sites across various locations in the UK were withdrawn due to military needs related to the Ukraine invasion and housing requirements for asylum seekers.
The program ended in April 2022. Despite a recent review indicating land for over 34,000 homes, no land has yet been released for development.
