DeepMind to Build First ‘Automated Research Lab’ in UK to Advance AI-Driven Scientific Discovery

Google’s AI unit announces a pioneering facility focused on materials science and priority access for British scientists as part of expanded UK-AI partnership.
Google DeepMind has announced plans to establish its first automated research laboratory in the United Kingdom as part of a deepening strategic partnership with the British government, aiming to accelerate AI-driven scientific discovery and strengthen the country’s role in cutting-edge innovation.

The laboratory, scheduled to open in 2026, will apply artificial intelligence and robotics to materials science research — including the development of advanced superconductors, solar cells and semiconductors — with the goal of shortening timelines for breakthroughs that could enhance technologies spanning from energy efficiency to computing capability.

Under the agreement, UK researchers will receive priority access to DeepMind’s scientific AI tools and models, allowing local scientists to collaborate closely with one of the foremost AI research organisations in the world.

The initiative forms a central pillar of the UK government’s broader strategy to harness AI for public benefit, encompassing applications in science, education, public services and national security.

DeepMind will also work with the UK’s AI Security Institute to investigate AI reasoning processes and explore the social, emotional and economic impacts of advanced systems, bolstering efforts to ensure safe and responsible AI deployment.

The partnership underscores the UK’s ambition to remain at the forefront of global artificial intelligence research and innovation, building on DeepMind’s historic roots in Britain and its internationally recognised achievements, including breakthroughs in protein folding and reinforcement learning.

British officials have described the collaboration as a model for how public and private sectors can jointly address complex scientific challenges while delivering tangible benefits to citizens.

The announcement follows Google’s broader commitment to invest billions into the UK’s digital infrastructure and AI ecosystem, reflecting confidence in the country’s talent base and research excellence.

As the automated lab takes shape, it is expected to catalyse new opportunities in science and technology, providing a platform for discoveries that could reshape industries and contribute to the UK’s long-term economic and technological leadership.
