Cricket Commission Report Reveals Widespread Discrimination in English and Welsh Cricket Game

The ICEC report was published on Tuesday and revealed widespread discrimination in the English and Welsh cricket game, including racism, sexism, classism, and elitism.

The report, which gathered evidence from over 4,000 respondents, found that women are subjected to sexual harassment, sexting, and a culture of "predatory behaviour," while a Muslim cricketer faced discrimination and a 13-year-old on a talent pathway was subjected to racial abuse.

The report found significant disparities in investment between men's and women's cricket, with England men receiving 13 times the overall amount paid to England women.

The ECB chair offered a "heartfelt apology" to those who have been discriminated against and excluded, and the report made 44 recommendations, including that the ECB makes an unreserved public apology.

The report by the Cricket Commission has found that racism in cricket is widespread and a serious problem.

There is a culture of overt discrimination, including racist, misogynistic, homophobic and ableist comments and actions, as well as a "laddish" drinking culture that can make some people vulnerable.

The report also found that 50% of respondents had experienced discrimination in the past five years.

The commission recommended that the historic Eton versus Harrow and Oxford against Cambridge fixtures should not be played at Lord's from 2023 onwards, to stop the message of elitism, and questioned why the England women's team has not played a Test at the venue.

The report concluded that cricket is institutionally and structurally sexist and has class-based discrimination, and that a lack of cricket in state schools and a talent pathway structurally aligned to private schools is partly to blame.
