National Grid Takes Action to Clear Renewable Energy Backlog, Meet Net Zero Targets

The National Grid Electricity System Operator in the UK is taking action to address a backlog of slow-moving energy projects that are blocking the grid, causing delays for renewable energy generators.

The operator will kick projects out of the queue if they are not progressing fast enough.

The move is part of an urgent push to clear the backlog and allow renewable power generators to connect to the grid more efficiently.

The government has promised to decarbonize power in the country by 2035, requiring a massive expansion in renewable energy and other sources, and the National Grid needs to move to accommodate this.

The energy regulator Ofgem has criticized the delays and described them as "unacceptable," with more than 200 energy projects due to connect to the grid before 2026, totaling approximately 40GW.

The government has estimated that demand for electricity could double by 2035.

The next UK government must invest in upgrading the electrical grid to support the growth of renewable energy and meet net zero emissions targets.

Failure to do so could result in economic loss for the UK.
