Her husband Scott Brand said that Goodyear, who is 81, had been suffering from forgetfulness and they had been seeking medical advice, but there is no hope of a reversal in the situation and her condition will get progressively worse.
Goodyear played the leopard-skin-loving barmaid on the show from 1966 to 2003 and became one of the longest-serving and best-loved characters.
Fans will still be able to meet her, but she may get confused, particularly if she is tired.
