The Illegal Migration Bill, which aims to deport those who arrive in the UK without permission, has been criticized by MPs and peers for breaching the country's human rights obligations.

The bill would deny the majority of refugees access to the asylum system, impact children and victims of trafficking and modern slavery, and would enshrine in law broad detention and search powers, and deny protections to modern slavery victims, as well as removing the right of appeals following age assessments.

The Joint Committee on Human Rights said that the bill would breach a number of the UK's international human rights obligations including the European Convention on Human Rights, and risks breaching others.

The government has faced criticism from opposition parties and charities, who argue that the bill is unworkable and could breach international law.

The committee's chairwoman said that the bill would disproportionately impact the most vulnerable and that it would breach the UK's legal obligations to such victims.
