Tory MPs have criticized a government bill called the Economic Activity of Public Bodies (Overseas Matters) Bill, also known as the anti-BDS bill. This legislation aims to prevent public bodies, including councils, from boycotting or sanctioning specific international territories unless it aligns with the UK government's foreign policy.

It's designed to limit the reach of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for boycotts of Israel and Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

During a parliamentary debate, some MPs, including Conservatives, raised concerns about the bill. They argued that it violates freedom of speech and expressed fears that naming Israel in the legislation could fuel antisemitism in the UK.

Communities Secretary Michael Gove defended the bill, stating it would combat antisemitism and maintain community cohesion. The bill received mixed reactions in Parliament, with amendments proposed by various MPs being defeated. It continues its progress through Parliament.
