Common transfer test: Thousands of children to sit first paper

About 14,000 children in Northern Ireland are set to take the first paper of the new common transfer test, a major change in the post-primary transfer system since the end of the 11-plus test in 2008.

This test, organized by the Schools Entrance Assessment Group (SEAG), replaces the previous separate AQE and PPTC tests.

Students and the principal of St Paul's Primary School in west Belfast shared their perspectives, focusing on the importance of self-belief and parental support.

The test, scheduled for November 11 and 25, 2023, will cover English and maths, with an Irish option available, and is formatted with multiple-choice and comprehension questions.

The results, expected at the end of January 2024, will influence admissions to 62 mostly grammar schools in Northern Ireland.

Despite detailed planning by SEAG, the transfer test has faced controversy, particularly regarding academic selection, with a Queen's University Belfast study suggesting it perpetuates societal divisions and disadvantages disadvantaged groups.
