Colum Eastwood Resigns as SDLP Leader

Colum Eastwood will resign as SDLP leader on Thursday, announced BBC News NI. Eastwood, who became leader in 2015, also serves as MP for Foyle. His decision follows a challenging general election for the SDLP, despite retaining key seats.

Colum Eastwood is to resign as leader of the SDLP on Thursday, as confirmed by BBC News NI.

Eastwood has led the Social Democratic and Labour Party since 2015 and serves as the MP for Foyle.

The decision was first reported by The Irish News and comes eight weeks after he retained his Westminster seat with a reduced majority of one thousand, one hundred sixty-six.

Despite retaining seats in South Belfast & Mid Down, the SDLP saw disappointing results in the recent general election, losing significant support in South Down and Upper Bann.

Eastwood will remain in his leadership role until a successor is elected, expected by the party’s annual conference in October.
