Coal-fired power plant unit put on standby by Britain's National Grid due to increased electricity demand

Britain's National Grid has asked Uniper to put a coal-fired power plant unit on standby due to warmer temperatures increasing electricity demand.

12 June 2023 · 22:49 UTC

This is despite Britain's goal to close all coal-fired power plants by October 2024 as part of efforts to cut fossil fuel emissions and reach its 2050 net-zero target.

The gas-fired power plants are currently providing around 41% of Britain's electricity, with wind power at 7%, and a subsea power cable connecting Britain and Norway is operating at half its capacity due to a technical fault.

The exact reason for the notification has not been commented on by National Grid ESO.
