Despite facing a robbery on its opening day, enduring racial tensions in Bermondsey during the 70s and 80s, and battling the economic strain of Covid, this establishment, housing an 80-year-old tandoor, has continued to thrive.
The restaurant, initially named Dreamland Tandoori, was taken over in 1977 by Israf Ali, grandfather of the current owner, Suhel Ahmed. Over the years, it expanded its presence and underwent a rebranding in 1978 to be known as Tower Tandoori. Suhel shares heartwarming memories of his life intertwined with the restaurant. From being dropped to school by the restaurant's waiters to spending holidays there, the restaurant has been a significant part of his life.
Suhel recalls the hesitations his father had about making changes to the restaurant due to past experiences with racial tensions. Despite all challenges, the spirit of Tower Tandoori remains unbroken, even during the pandemic when they had to pivot to takeaways to continue serving their loyal customers.
