Church of England Supports Proposals for Trial Blessings of Same-Sex Weddings
The Church of England has approved a narrow majority decision for trial blessings of same-sex unions. The General Synod voted in favor of temporary blessings for these couples, allowing them to have celebratory services resembling traditional weddings with music and readings. Clergy participation is voluntary.

Previously, bishops agreed to recommend special blessing prayers within regular services and initiated a two-year process for officially authorizing such ceremonies under church law.
Despite the close vote, Archbishops Justin Welby of Canterbury and Stephen Cottrell of York support the decision but acknowledge the church's divided stance on sexuality. Bishop Sarah Mullally, leading the conversation on Living in Love and Faith, confirmed this sentiment.
LGBTQ+ advocate Jayne Ozanne sees the move as offering minimal hope, criticizing the church for institutional homophobia. Meanwhile, lay member Daniel Matovu objected, arguing that the proposal contradicts biblical teachings.
The synod also rejected amendments perceived as stalling progress toward marriage equality, an issue dividing the church for over two decades.
