Church of England backs services for gay couples

The Church of England has decided to allow special services of blessing for gay couples, a significant shift from its traditional teachings.

These services, which are not formal wedding ceremonies, can include various elements like the wearing of rings and a priest's blessing. The decision was narrowly passed by one vote in the General Synod, the Church's legislative body.

Despite this development, the Church's official stance still defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Previously, bishops had permitted prayers of blessings for gay relationships within broader services but stopped short of allowing same-sex weddings. The new services of blessing could commence as trial runs in the new year.

Bishop of Oxford Rt Rev Stephen Croft, a supporter of this change, welcomed the decision, highlighting its potential to affirm and welcome gay couples into church life. However, this move has elicited mixed reactions.

LGBT campaigners within the Church, like Jayne Ozanne, criticize it for not going far enough in allowing same-sex marriages. Meanwhile, conservative clergy members express concern over potential divisions within the Church community and strained clergy-bishop relationships resulting from this decision.
