Chris Whitty, The Steadfast Voice of Calm Authority in England's Covid Crisis

During the height of the UK's Covid crisis, England's Chief Medical Officer, Sir Chris Whitty, became an icon of composed leadership. Notably, amidst the second deadly wave in Christmas 2020, Whitty was found treating patients in a London hospital. This contrasts starkly with Boris Johnson, who John Crace of the Guardian mockingly contrasted with Whitty, highlighting public preference for Whitty's communication over Johnson's.

Whitty, an advocate of science-led policy, became a trusted national figure, regularly featured alongside government officials during press briefings and becoming a symbol of trusted expertise. His popularity was so that merchandise like mugs bearing his likeness were sold.

Despite wide public trust, Whitty faced challenges, including protests and an assault in St James’s Park in June 2021, which led to convictions for two men.

Whitty, who grew up in northern Nigeria and tragically lost his father as a teenager, received significant funding from the Gates Foundation in 2008 for malaria research. He has served as a scientific adviser in various capacities and is known for his academic contributions and excellent lectures, alongside additional degrees in law and business.

He has previously contributed to discussions on the UK's preparedness for Covid-19 during an inquiry, noting a lack of proactive measures and foresight for non-respiratory pandemic threats. He also expressed skepticism over economic recovery initiatives like Sunak's "eat out to help out" scheme, which he humorously remarked could aid virus spread. Whitty is set to be questioned about these and other issues at the forthcoming inquiry.
