Shortly after Zhang arrived in London in 2017, Wen transitioned from her modest accommodation at the Chinese takeaway to a lavish £5 million London home.
Despite pretenses of operating an international jewelry business, Wen's extravagant lifestyle, including high-end purchases at Harrods and upscale living arrangements, raised suspicions.
Wen had reported just £5,979 in earnings for the financial year 2016/17 and couldn't account for the Bitcoin she intended to use to purchase expensive real estate.
A police raid on October 31, 2018, began the unraveling of the case, which led to the discovery of 61,000 Bitcoin over two years later, worth £1.4 billion at that time and now exceeding £3 billion. An additional 23,308 Bitcoin remains at large, now valued at more than £1 billion.
The fraud was traced back to Zhang, who swindled nearly 130,000 Chinese investors through investment schemes and entered the UK with a fake passport.
Although Wen was not accused of the original fraud, she has been found guilty of money laundering related to handling Bitcoin from October 2017 to January 2022.
Sentencing for Wen is scheduled for May 10. She had previously been acquitted of further money laundering charges, and the details of the case were kept under wraps to avoid triggering a hack on the firm holding the seized cryptocurrency.
Wen, whose life story highlighted a humble beginning in China and a move to the UK in 2007, saw her circumstances change dramatically after meeting Zhang.
Despite claiming that she was simply a "front person," duped by her employer, Wen is now awaiting sentencing, while Zhang remains at large with authorities continuing their search.
