The announcement, set to be made by Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden, will detail China's involvement in cyber-attacks on the UK, including an attack on the Electoral Commission that exposed the details of about 40 million voters.

Among those targeted are MPs and peers, with 43 individuals highlighted for being particularly affected.

In response, the UK government is considering sanctions against those linked to these cyber-attacks. A briefing has been conducted for key political figures known for their critical stance on China, including former Conservative leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith and other members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, which focuses on challenges posed by China.

This situation echoes previous state-sponsored cyber-attacks attributed to China against various countries’ officials and was discussed at a recent meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China.

This comes alongside news of a US army intelligence analyst charged with attempting to sell defence secrets to China, and as the UK looks to update its spying laws through the Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill, aiming to bolster the country's defense against evolving cyber-threats.
