Chinese company BYD has surpassed Elon Musk's Tesla in electric vehicle (EV) sales, also outperforming the American automaker in plug-in hybrid electric vehicle sales with over 400,000 units sold in the last quarter.
Tesla, led by Musk, delivered a record 484,507 vehicles in Q4 of 2023, an 11% increase from the third quarter. Nevertheless, it lost the top spot in battery electric sales to BYD, which sold 526,409 vehicles in the same timeframe.
Tesla's production also fell short of BYD's, highlighting the competitive challenges ahead.
After the announcement,
Tesla's shares initially dropped, then recovered to close nearly unchanged. BYD, initially a battery maker, now excels in the EV market, partly thanks to strong governmental support in China.
This domestic market strength aids BYD's global competitiveness, although it does not currently sell cars in the U.S. due to high import tariffs.
Despite this quarterly setback,
Tesla's annual sales remained robust, with over 1.8 million EVs delivered in 2022—a 38% increase—compared to BYD's nearly 1.6 million vehicles.
Analysts predict a positive outlook for
Tesla in 2024, with expected benefits from lower battery costs, a new mass-market EV model, and potential market gains from competitors' setbacks.
