China Tightens Export Controls on Key Materials Used in Computer Chips

China is tightening controls over exports of gallium and germanium, two key materials used to make computer chips.

The move comes after US efforts to curb Chinese access to some advanced microprocessors.

The restrictions will be implemented through special licenses required for exports starting next month.

The silvery metals are used in semiconductors, communications, and military equipment, and are also key materials in products like solar panels.

The US has taken steps to restrict China's access to technology that could be used for military purposes, such as chips used for supercomputing and AI.

The Dutch and Japan have also announced similar measures.

The restrictions are expected to affect Dutch chip equipment maker ASML and Japan's semiconductor manufacturing exports.

China has frequently called the US a "tech hegemony" in response to export controls imposed by Washington.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is due to visit Beijing for a four-day trip starting Thursday.
