The hole aims to reach the cretaceous system in the Earth's crust, which dates back 145 million years.

The project is expected to help identify mineral and energy resources and assess environmental risks.

The deepest man-made hole on Earth is the Russian Kola Superdeep Borehole, which reached a depth of 12,262 meters in 1989.

President Xi Jinping called for greater progress in deep Earth exploration in 2021.
