Channel 4 apologizes for neglecting Russell Brand complaint

Channel 4's chief, Alex Mahon, issued an apology after a review revealed the network failed to look into a significant complaint lodged against comedian Russell Brand in 2009.

The oversight was discovered during an internal investigation that also concluded Channel 4 executives were previously unaware of allegations against Brand during his tenure there, despite a Channel 4 "Dispatches" exposé later uncovering accusations of rape and sexual assault, which Brand has consistently denied.

Brand, who is known for hosting shows like "Big Brother's Big Mouth," was featured in the "Dispatches" documentary following allegations brought to light by The Times.

Post-airing, two additional troubling complaints emerged about Brand's conduct at Channel 4; one was improperly handled and not investigated per protocol.

The network's probe found no evidence that Channel 4 staff was privy to the claims made in "Dispatches” before 2019. Mahon expressed regret over previously tolerated inappropriate behaviors within the industry and emphasized the importance of a safe work environment.

Channel 4 Chairman Sir Ian Cheshire assured that current safeguards would ensure any similar allegations would be appropriately reported. London's Metropolitan Police continues to investigate Brand on multiple allegations, which he has denied, affirming his past relationships were consensual.
