High vacancy rates and low wages in care work have been exacerbated post-Brexit and during the Covid pandemic, leading to 160,000 vacancies in 2022-23.

In response, care workers were added to the shortage occupation list for easier recruitment from abroad.

However, the system is problematic, with the Home Office unable to adequately monitor employers, resulting in exploitation.

Migrant workers have paid agents thousands of pounds, only to find no actual job available.

While they can work an additional 20 hours elsewhere, leaving their initial employer risks their immigration status.

With only 60 days to find another sponsor, many struggle to secure alternative employment.
