Unknowingly, she exceeded the earnings threshold for carer's allowance by working an extra shift at the supermarket, resulting in a £6,000 fine.
A woman named Grater, 55, had to quit her job to care for her ill partner during his chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.
She later returned to work part-time at Sainsbury's while continuing to care for him.
Grater believed she didn't need to inform the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) about her increased earnings since her universal credit had been reduced automatically.
However, the DWP accused her of committing fraud for failing to report her third shift.
A woman named Grater was surprised to receive a bill for £5,738.40 after exceeding the earnings limit for carer's allowance by a small amount.
Unpaid carers are required to repay the entire carer's allowance for each week they were in breach of the limit, regardless of the amount exceeded.
Grater's low-paid part-time job pushed her over the DWP's "cliff edge," leaving her with a large unexpected debt.
