He emphasized the importance of closer cooperation between Ireland and the United Kingdom, suggesting that both nations share a unique heritage and should work together to promote shared values on the global stage.
Rosindell stated that Ireland could benefit from emulating the paths of Commonwealth nations such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
He expressed optimism that the people of the Republic might eventually decide to engage more significantly within the Commonwealth framework.
Additionally, Mr. Rosindell proposed the introduction of a national bank holiday for St Patrick’s Day, mirroring existing celebrations for St David’s Day, St Andrew’s Day, and St George’s Day, which honor the patron saints of the UK’s constituent nations.
He argued that recognizing all four feast days would reflect the unity of the Kingdom's nations.
He noted that reinstating the Order of St Patrick, which has not been active for several decades, would reaffirm the significance of the various nations within the UK and promote national solidarity.
Jereme Mayhew, also speaking from the Conservative frontbench, supported the idea of restoring the Order of St Patrick as a sensible initiative.
In response to these proposals, Northern Ireland minister Fleur Anderson acknowledged the mention of the Order of St Patrick and indicated that she would take it into consideration.
However, Cabinet Office minister Nick Thomas-Symonds clarified in a written response that the UK Government is not currently contemplating the restoration of the Order, which is regarded as an honor bestowed by the sovereign.
This exchange reflects ongoing discussions about national identity and the relationships between the UK and Ireland in a contemporary context.
