Gerber, who manages a wealth management firm holding approximately 260,000 shares of Tesla stock valued at around $105 million, expressed concerns that Musk's leadership has been detrimental to the company's reputation.
Gerber has criticized Musk for being 'divisive' and has linked his various business interests and involvement in political spheres, particularly his connection to the Trump administration, to Tesla's current challenges.
He emphasized that Tesla has been 'neglected for too long,' suggesting that Musk's attention is divided among multiple commitments, including his role as the head of the social media platform X.
Recent controversies surrounding Musk have intensified scrutiny of his leadership.
Incidents include a gesture during a public appearance that drew comparisons to a Hitler salute, cuts to numerous US government jobs, and expressions of support for Germany's far-right political party, the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
These actions have contributed to a broader public backlash against Musk and, in turn, against Tesla, with social media posts that stoke division drawing significant criticism.
The automotive market has also undergone notable shifts, with Tesla facing declining demand for electric vehicles in Western markets.
Compounding these challenges, competition from Chinese manufacturers offering lower-priced electric vehicles has begun to affect Tesla's market position, contributing to a decline in market value of over $800 billion since December of the previous year.
On March 18, the company's stock experienced a further 4% drop in trading.
Demonstrators have organized protests outside Tesla stores across the United States, partly motivated by allegations of Musk's role in advocating for deep cuts in federal government spending as part of his collaboration with the Trump administration.
This discontent mirrors a growing movement in both North America and Europe aimed at challenging Musk's influence in political and economic spheres.
Critics argue that Musk’s actions have not only undermined Tesla's standing but also defy legislative oversight of the federal budget process.
Gerber articulated his frustrations to the media, stating, 'The company's reputation has just been destroyed by Elon Musk,' and labeled the situation as a crisis for Tesla, asserting that the company is unable to effectively market its leading product due to Musk's controversial persona.
He posited that the company would benefit from new leadership focused exclusively on Tesla's operations, suggesting that Musk’s dual roles could lead to further complications for the brand's future.
