The documentary aired on BBC Two and focuses on the living conditions in Gaza amidst ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Concerns were raised after it was disclosed that Abdullah is the son of Ayman Alyazouri, who serves as Hamas’s deputy minister of agriculture.
A letter sent to BBC director-general Tim Davie by notable figures including actress Tracy-Ann Oberman and prominent producer Neil Blair requests the immediate cessation of all broadcasts and the removal of the documentary from BBC iPlayer, as well as the deletion of related social media content.
They have urged for an independent investigation into the matter, emphasizing the need for transparency towards licence-fee payers.
The signatories of the letter raised questions regarding the BBC's adherence to editorial standards and compliance with the Ofcom Broadcasting Code.
They specifically inquired whether the BBC was aware of Abdullah's familial connections before broadcasting the documentary and highlighted the lack of disclosure about his relationship to a senior Hamas leader.
Furthermore, the letter questioned the BBC's due diligence practices, including whether parental consent was obtained for Abdullah’s participation in the film and whether the production team secured approval from Hamas for the documentary’s creation.
Hoyo Films, the producer of the documentary, has also been contacted for comments regarding the situation.
In response, the BBC acknowledged the new information about Abdullah’s background and indicated that they would revise the film prior to any future broadcasts.
The corporation has committed to the highest standards of transparency and expressed regret for not disclosing Abdullah's family connections during the initial airing.
A new disclaimer marking the film will state: 'The narrator of this film is 13-year-old Abdullah.
His father has worked as a deputy agriculture minister for the Hamas-run government in Gaza.
The production team had full editorial control of filming with Abdullah.'
Since the onset of violence in October 2023, which was marked by a Hamas attack on festivalgoers and Israeli settlers, fatalities among Palestinians in Gaza have surpassed 48,000, according to reports from Gaza's Health Ministry.
Amid the ongoing conflict, Hamas has also been engaged in releasing hostages to Israel as part of a truce agreement.
Hoyo Films has a history of producing documentaries, including 'Ukraine: Enemy In The Woods,' which documented the Ukrainian perspective during the ongoing war with Russia.
