A bipartisan request emphasizes the need for advance knowledge to prepare for a potential extension of the program into the 2024-25 school year.

The program, a response to the cost of living crisis with a £135 million budget, was initially a one-year emergency measure. Conservative mayoral candidate Susan Hall has committed to sustaining the scheme if elected in May 2024.

Mayor Khan has previously expressed his desire to maintain the policy but awaits a decision on funding. The London Assembly's budget and performance committee has stressed the urgency of an announcement for boroughs to plan effectively.

So far, the program has distributed over 10 million meals, benefitting around 287,000 London children. A final decision on its extension is expected shortly, with the mayor's draft budget review set for early 2024.

Currently, the program serves primary school students from Years 3-6, complementing the government's existing provision of free meals to younger students and those from certain low-income families.
