The theft surprised the agricultural community, as semen storage is specialized and requires careful handling due to the extremely cold temperatures involved.

Preserving bull semen is crucial for maintaining valuable genetics in cattle breeding. The remaining straws from prize-winning bulls are in high demand, often fetching high prices. While the tanks themselves can be costly when new, their stolen value is likely lower.

Artificial insemination is essential in farming for biosecurity and improving genetic quality for productivity, temperament, and environmental performance. Scientists aim to breed cattle with reduced methane emissions, as agriculture contributes significantly to greenhouse gas production.
