During his plea, Lewis expressed deep remorse and embarrassment for his actions to Judge Jessica G.L. Clarke. Despite potential severe sentencing, his representatives emphasize Lewis's lifelong achievements and integrity, noting that he never engaged in improper trading himself.
Lewis was previously accused of sharing confidential information with close associates, including personal pilots and friends, from 2013 to 2021, which allowed them to make millions in illegal profits.
Initially facing 16 counts of securities fraud and three counts of conspiracy, Lewis secured his release on $300 million bail secured against a yacht and private aircraft. His plea deal involves not pleading guilty to the remaining counts.
Forbes reports that Lewis’s net worth is $6.1 billion, diversely invested in sectors like real estate, biotech, and energy. As the head of the Tavistock Group, he's been influential in Premier League soccer and oversaw the construction of Tottenham's new billion-dollar stadium.
