Britain is preparing to formally recognize a Palestinian state this weekend, according to senior officials in London.

The move marks a major diplomatic shift and comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

Leaders in Westminster say the recognition is intended to reaffirm the U.K.’s commitment to a two-state solution, even as the decision faces strong political debate.
