BRIT Awards Announce Double Nominees for Gender-Neutral Categories and Introduce R&B Prize

The BRIT Awards will now feature ten nominees each for Artist of the Year and International Artist of the Year in its gender-neutral categories, doubling the previous count. This expansion follows backlash from an all-male nominee list at the recent ceremony. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) states the move seeks to foster better inclusivity.

Additionally, an R&B category is being introduced, with nominees considered over a two-year period to allow more artists to qualify. BPI Chief Executive Jo Twist emphasized the organization's commitment to continually evolving the awards for greater representation.

Gender-neutral awards were first introduced in 2022. Despite the change, the 2023 awards faced criticism when Harry Styles, who won Artist of the Year, highlighted female artists in his acceptance speech given the lack of female nominees.

Beyoncé secured the International Artist of the Year title at the ceremony held in February.

Furthermore, the BRITs have chosen Rachel Jones as the trophy designer for the 2024 awards, set to take place on March 2 at London's O2 Arena.
