Brit Awards 2024: Raye Sets Nomination Record Amid Female Dominance

Artist Raye has made Brit Awards history by earning an unprecedented seven nominations in a single year, surpassing the former record-holders Craig David, Gorillaz, and Robbie Williams with their six nods.
Among her nominations, Raye is up for artist of the year, in a refreshed category where six out of ten contenders are women, highlighting a dramatic shift from the previous year's all-male roster.

The Brits expanded the top artist category to ten nominees in response to last year's backlash, leading to a more diverse field including Raye, Jessie Ware, Olivia Dean, Little Simz, Arlo Parks, and Dua Lipa, as well as male artists Dave, Central Cee, J Hus, and Fred Again.

In the international artist category, females are even more prominent, with eight out of ten slots, including Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo.

Notably absent from major categories, Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi have been overlooked despite chart-topping albums. Both received song of the year nominations, for Sheeran's "Eyes Closed" and Capaldi's "Wish You The Best."

Raye's additional nods cover categories such as best album, best new artist, best pop act, and a double entry for best song with "Escapism" and "Prada." She previously made waves by releasing her debut album independently after label disputes in 2021.

Women feature in 55% of this year's nominations, a figure that includes solo artists and all-female groups, increasing to 57% when mixed-gender groups are counted. BPI chair YolanDa Brown commended the diverse representation among nominees.

The Rolling Stones have been nominated for best rock act, a fan-voted category via Instagram. With the addition of the best R&B act to the genre categories, Raye finds herself nominated again alongside Cleo Sol and others. Album of the year contenders include Raye, Young Fathers, Little Simz, Blur, and J Hus.

The up-and-coming rock group The Last Dinner Party has been named this year's rising star. The voting body for the Brits includes about 1,300 music industry members. Dua Lipa is slated to perform at the awards ceremony scheduled for March 2 in London.

Key nominations include Raye, an array of talented groups, and standout albums from Blur, J Hus, Little Simz, and others.
