Brexit's Financial Toll on the UK

Brexit has significantly impacted the UK's economy, prompting London Mayor Sadiq Khan to push for closer EU ties as a recent report unveiled substantial economic losses. The UK economy has forfeited an estimated £140 billion, experiencing a 6% reduction in economic output compared to remaining in the EU, the Cambridge Econometrics report indicates.

Commissioned by Mayor Khan, the report assesses the impact of Brexit, showcasing a £30 billion shortfall in London's economy and a decrease in individual income, with Britons and Londoners being around £2,000 and £3,400 worse off in 2023, respectively. The UK's job market reflects 1.8 million fewer jobs, including almost 300,000 in London.

An updated forecast by the Office for Budget Responsibility outlines an economic projection up to 2028-29, highlighting persistent challenges without stronger EU relations. By 2035, the report anticipates a total Brexit cost of £311 billion, a 10.1% drop in UK output, nearly 3 million fewer jobs (500,000 in London), and a 32% investment reduction. In contrast, London's productivity might remain stable, but the city will experience long-term struggles in output and employment due to Brexit.

The long-term effects of Brexit are expected to take 15 years to fully manifest in trade and productivity, according to a separate report from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR).
