A significant legal dispute has emerged as the University of Bolton seeks to rename itself the University of Greater Manchester.

Neighboring universities, including the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, and the University of Salford, have filed over 100 legal challenges, arguing the name change would cause confusion.

Bolton’s vice-chancellor, Prof. George Holmes, accuses these institutions of acting as a 'cartel' to prevent the rebranding.

Bolton's proposal, submitted to the Office for Students (OfS), aims to reflect its broad regional presence.

Holmes suggests appealing to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) over potential anti-competitive behavior.

Bolton has 8,730 full-time students and an annual income of £136m, compared to Manchester's 42,000 students and £1.3bn income.

Bolton claims 70% of its students come from Greater Manchester, justifying the new name.

The University of Manchester and Manchester Met assert the name change would be misleading, while Bolton plans further action.
