Despite a 0.4% revenue decline to €12.5 billion, the figure surpassed the expected €12.2 billion.
BNP Paribas, a French bank, reported a 20% decrease in income from debt securities, currencies, and commodities trading compared to the previous year.
However, this was offset by strong gains in equities trading and capital markets.
In contrast, Deutsche Bank noted a 7% increase in fixed income and currencies trading revenue.
Despite the decline in some areas, BNP Paribas' CEO, Jean-Laurent Bonnafé, expressed optimism about the bank's first-quarter 2024 performance.
He attributed the good results to business momentum in the operating divisions and reaffirmed the bank's revenue growth expectation of over 2% compared to 2023 and a net income that will surpass the 2023 distributable result.
BNP Paribas aims to grow its market shares and expand its investment banking division, with an annual growth rate of over 7.5% from 2021 to 2025.
The bank's CEO considers this division crucial to its growth plans.
The goal for 2021 is to generate full-year earnings exceeding €11.2 billion.
