Four BBC News Channel presenters, Martine Croxall, Annita McVeigh, Karin Giannone, and Kasia Madera, have initiated a legal action against the BBC for alleged sex and age discrimination and equal pay.

The presenters are currently undergoing a two-day hearing at an employment tribunal in London.

They assert that they were unfairly removed from their roles following a biased recruitment process.

The BBC maintains that its application process was fair and rigorous, and denies any claims of age or sex discrimination, harassment, or breach of the sex equality clause.

A preliminary hearing, which began on Wednesday, is preparing for a full tribunal against the BBC.

Four newsreaders, who have presented on the BBC's TV channels, are involved in the case.

In July 2022, the BBC announced plans to merge its domestic and international news channels.

The presenters allege that before the merger announcement, the BBC's Channels' manager, Jess Brammar, privately assured them their jobs were secure.

However, they were later put through a job application process in February 2023 and were not recruited as chief presenters but offered correspondent roles instead, which they claim was a demotion and a pay reduction.

The presenters on a BBC program criticized the recruitment process as a "sham," claiming their jobs were closed despite ongoing work.

They also alleged unequal pay compared to a male counterpart since February 2020 and had previously filed equal pay claims.
