BBC iPlayer to end programme downloads for PCs and Macs

The BBC will discontinue iPlayer downloads for desktop and laptop users, while mobile devices will retain download capabilities via the app.

Due to low usage and high maintenance costs, the feature will be phased out on the following schedule:

- February 2: iPlayer Downloads app will no longer be available for new downloads.

- March 11: Web downloads cease, but existing downloads can be viewed until April 8.

- April 8: The iPlayer Downloads app for PCs and Macs will be shut down.

Though undisclosed, the number of affected users has led to some backlash. Individuals, including a former BBC journalist and a viewer, have expressed their dismay on social media platforms.

However, despite drops in traditional TV viewership, the BBC highlights its digital growth, with iPlayer constituting 18% of its total viewing, according to Ofcom.
