Banksy Pays Homage to Tony Allen, Comedy Innovator

Banksy has made the unusual move of issuing a statement to honor the late "born troublemaker" Tony Allen, an influential figure in the alternative comedy movement of the 1970s who passed away earlier in December.

While Banksy typically communicates through his art, he took the time to express his admiration for Allen on the BBC Radio 4 program Last Word.

Best known for co-founding the groundbreaking comedic landscape alongside peers like Alexei Sayle, Tony Allen was a revolutionary comedian who may not have reached household fame but remains a legendary figure among his peers.

Following his death, comedians such as Mark Thomas and Mark Steel acknowledged his significant role in shaping modern comedy, with Thomas celebrating him as a "glorious free spirit."

Apart from his legacy in comedy, Allen was also notable for his activism, co-founding the Ruff Tuff Cream Puff Estate Agency which helped squatters find empty houses in west London, a mission in line with Banksy's own ethos.

Allen's subversive wit and influence extended to Banksy's 2015 project Dismaland, a satirical "bemusement" park in Weston-super-Mare, where he trained stewards, resulting in a crew of deliberately dismal employees that memorably added to the exhibit's charm.

Tony Allen continued to perform, write, and teach comedy up until his death at age 78, leaving behind a rich legacy in the comedic and performative arts.
