Bank of England Takes the Lead in Central Banks' Call for Restrictive Policies

The Bank of England (BoE) Deputy Governor Dave Ramsden stated that to combat inflation, an extended period of restrictive monetary policy is necessary.

This sentiment was supported by central bank officials from Australia and Spain at a conference in Hong Kong. Despite a series of rate hikes, with the UK's interest rate at 5.25%, inflation is still not expected to hit the 2% target until the end of 2025.

Meanwhile, Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock asserted that similar measures are being taken in Australia where high costs are being transferred to consumers, fuelling inflation. Australia's cash rate has reached a 12-year peak at 4.35%, with potential further increases anticipated.

Bank of Spain's Governor Pablo Hernández de Cos also agreed on the need for continued restrictive policy in the near term but mentioned a possible easing if inflation slows as predicted.

The European Central Bank (ECB), where de Cos serves on the council, raised rates to a new high of 4% and projected stable rates for the coming months, though markets speculate cuts may occur by mid-year.
