Bank of England expected to hold interest rates

The Bank of England is anticipated to maintain its interest rate at 5.25% for the fifth consecutive month on Thursday, despite facing lower inflation in February than expected.

They aim to manage inflation, which has been declining since peaking at 11.1% in October 2022, without negatively impacting the economy. Although inflation is slowing, prices continue to rise.

Governor Andrew Bailey has stated the Bank intends to see clear signs of inflation control before considering rate reductions. The target inflation rate is 2%, and interest rates are adjusted to meet this goal. After 14 straight hikes designed to slow inflation, rates have been steady to balance economic growth concerns.

High-interest rates mean more expensive borrowing for households and the government but better returns for savers. The Bank's rate decisions consider various economic indicators, such as service inflation, which is high at 6.1%, and wage growth, which has decreased to 6.1%.

Internationally, central banks in the US and Europe have also halted rate hikes recently. The UK's interest rate stands among the highest in the G7 economies.
