Arsenal tipped to sign Premier League star: 'It's only a matter of time'

With Mikel Arteta looking to bolster his squad in January, former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson believes it is ‘only a matter of time’ before Arsenal sign a Premier League star.

Arteta will look to strengthen his squad at the Emirates when the transfer window opens in January.

Arsenal will almost certainly be top of the Premier League by then, having soared five points clear at the top of the English top-flight during the first-half of the season.

The Gunners have two more games to play in 2022 as they face London rivals West Ham on Boxing Day and Brighton on New Year’s Eve.

The January window will provide an opportunity for Arsenal to bring in a couple of new signings as they look to maintain a stunning title challenge.

Arteta is expected to target a new midfielder and the Gunners have been linked with a move for Leicester star Tielemans over the past 12 months.

They could revive their interest as the Belgian midfielder enters the final six months of his contract at the King Power Stadium.

Ex-Tottenham defender Dawson believes it is ‘only a matter of time’ before Arsenal sign Tielemans and insists he would be a welcome addition to Arteta’s squad.

‘Yes, he would [be a good signing for Arsenal],’ Dawson told Sky Sports. ‘They have been looking at him for a long, long time.

‘He is coming to the end of his contract, so that would be a no-brainer, I think. Will they wait until the summer? That would be the only question. I think it will only be a matter of time for Tielemans.’

Arteta was asked about his intentions for the January transfer window earlier this week and said: ‘This is the squad we have and we have to utilise it in the best possible way.

‘I said from day one that we have a short squad because at the end we left some players. It’s what we have.

‘If everyone’s available and no one is injured we are OK, but the moment there is, we know what it is. It’s nothing new. I think I said it the first day after the transfer window.’
